Game reviews

Here you will find all the reviews that I have done for various indie games. Most of them are done over at The Indie Game Magazine, but no matter where they are found on this vast internet there will be a link to them here.

IGM | ESCHALON: BOOK II:

Eschalon Book II

When I first got my hands on Eschalon Book II, from Basilisk Games, I was a little worried. I had never played Eschalon Book I, so when the name speaks it so definitively of it, that can not be a good sign for a newbie to the series like myself. True, I had heard good things about it from fans of the series, but I had not, up to this point, heard about it from a non-legacy fan. By reading this, however, you are going to!

IGM | 8-BIT COMMANDO:

8-Bit Commando8-Bit Commando (from 2D Engine) is a platformer in the classic NES style; think Contra if you will. It is a serious blast from the past that speaks directly to a certain niche crowd. But can it speak to the rest of the gaming community as well?

IGM | Icebreakers:

Icebreakers gameplay

Icebreakers (by Xibalba Studios) is the love child that resulted when Mario Kart and Tron hooked up. It has elements of both, but is not overly like either one of them. The short and sweet of it is that it takes the multiplayer from Mario Kart, adds on the light tail from Tron, and calls it a day. Is that really enough to make a good game though?

IGM | AVADON: THE BLACK FORTRESS:

Avadon: The Black FortressAvadon is the latest RPG that has come out of Spiderweb Software Inc., the home of Jeff Vogel. He is the creator of the long running series Avernum and Geneforge. Avadon, however, is not part of any series that he is doing. It is a standalone game that excels in the places where most RPGs fail and ignores what most RPGs spend all their time on.

I am a RPG fanatic at heart, and it truly pains me seeing how poorly a lot of indie RPG titles are done. They concentrate so hard on the graphics and the combat that the story is laughable at best. The characters in these games are negligable, and the enemies are lame and predictable. To be perfectly honest, I had almost given up on indie RPG titles all together.

IGM | Invidia 422 AC:

Invidia 422 AC

Invidia 422 AC (by Menrva Games) has a lot of potential. It has a unique idea that really had me thinking about the possibilities, even before playing it that first time.

IGM | The Count of Monte Cristo:

Enter The Story

The idea behind the Enter the Story series had me intrigued as soon as I heard about it. Taking classic books and making them into games sounds like it should have been done a million different ways by a million different people, but it just isn’t done that much. It is so simplistic, yet has so much promise and such an opportunity. It has done exactly as it said, however, far too much effort was placed on the direct conversion of book to game. I found it lacking in one of the major areas that separate books from games.

IGM | Transcendence:

Transcendence is a space adventure game that was created by George Moromisato. He states that his inspiration for the game was his love for both space adventures as well as the game Nethack. It’s game play is simple but with a certain level of finesse that is needed to really play it to its fullest.
